HOW IT ALL BEGAN
In November 2025, Episcopal Diocese of Texas Bishop Andy Doyle together with Interfaith Leaders across Texas issued a moral call to feed the people today in response to a federal SNAP interruption.
During the same time, local food ministry leaders across Texas noticed changes in the number of people coming to receive food and reductions in the amount and quality of the food they were receiving from food banks. Squeezed at both ends, this group of food ministry leaders wondered what was going on.
We learned this was not the food banks’ fault; federal changes were impacting Texas. Due to changes in federal policy, what we experienced in November 2025 during the SNAP interruption could become the consistent reality.
In partnership with these initial food ministries.
SNAP is the key. 90% of hungry Texans are fed through SNAP. All our charitable and food bank efforts feed 10% of hungry Texans. And, due to federal changes, responsibility for a significant portion of funding for SNAP benefits is for the first time shifting to the states.
Responding to the moral call of our faith leaders and to the changing landscape of SNAP, our Texas food ministry leaders launched the Call to Feed the Hungry campaign to sign up Texas citizens in support of SNAP, to ensure that SNAP continues at its current level, even as funding responsibility shifts to the state. We as food ministry leaders, together with partners across denominations, faiths, and non-profit organizations, believe SNAP is critical to making sure no Texan goes hungry.
CALL TO FEED THE HUNGRY CAMPAIGN OVERVIEW
"The 'Call to Feed the Hungry' is a new interfaith campaign tackling growing food insecurity across Texas. We aim to galvanize people of faith and conscience to partner with lawmakers, ensuring essential food programs—such as SNAP, school meals and more —remain adequately funded. Our goal is to empower a knowledgeable constituency of Texans to advocate effectively for these vital programs in the upcoming legislative session."
THREE PHASES OF THE CALL
Education – We began the campaign by educating our members and partners about SNAP and recruiting them to sign up others
Fall Media campaign – All of our members and partners share videos, testimonials, info sheets, and more on social media to sign up supporters
Legislative advocacy – Ask those who have signed up to ‘opt in’ to the legislative campaign and contact their legislators in support of SNAP
